Not long ago, I discovered a fun little app for iPhone called "Percolate." It takes a photo and reinterprets it in a pattern of circles or rings. It's worth checking out. Anyway, I liked the patterns so much that I wanted to try an abstract of rings myself.
So, I began (without a photo) on a gray background, just placing rings, going smaller and smaller, until I got down to about 0.2". I was not trying to create a recognizable image, just an interesting abstract. Due to RAM issues, this took significantly longer than I had anticipated. Finally, I scrapped everything and started again in Illustrator. Once I had all the rings in place, I imported the AI file into Photoshop to color it up.
